Tencent creates own TOS system
TENCENT Inc launched its own operating system yesterday for smart devices like phone, micro-size game console, smartwatch and virtual reality set, as the company became another Internet giant to release its OS.
Tencent aims to establish a smart device ecosystem through the Tencent OS, or TOS, by cooperating with partners on software, hardware, chips and online services. Tencent is already cooperating with Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo, Qualcomm and Didi Taxi on TOS.
Currently the TOS supports eight smartphone models from Samsung and LG. Tencent said during the Global Mobile Internet Conference in Beijing that it plans to release a TOS-based smartwatch through partners in May, and more phones and game devices later.
There will be 50 billion units of smart devices sold in 2020, up from 15 billion units now, representing a huge market potential, analysts said.
Users can access the TOS through their accounts of QQ or WeChat, both developed by Tencent. WeChat has several hundreds of million users in China.
