Tencent opens up platform

TENCENT yesterday launched an enhanced web-based open platform called Q+, which is based on its popular instant messaging service QQ, as it aims to improve the usefulness of its user platform.

More than 600 million Tencent users will have access to a variety of Internet-based services including online shopping, online music streaming, online videos and others, without being constrained by the restrictions of the operating system or where they log onto QQ.

"QQ's open strategy will bring together huge number of users with numerous web-based services so that we can better push forward the Internet industry with partners and collaborators," said Xiong Minghua, chief technology officer of Tencent.

Tencent has around 2,000 applications. Users can personalize their QQ interface by adding their favorite applications to the web pages and access them each time they log onto QQ. Third-party developers can use Tencent's file sharing as well as audio and video communication.
