United Nations Development Program teams up with Baidu on data innovation

UNITED Nations Development Program and China's largest search site Baidu jointly launched a big data laboratory to leverage the Chinese company's capacity on data mining and analyzing.

The UNDP will initially focus its attention on providing industry trends and data-driven support and advice for United Nations' strategy.

Major research focus of the lab will be healthcare and environmental protection.

"Data innovation is a key sector in the big data era and we hope to leverage Baidu's data technologies to help UNDP to cope with global issues and realize the Millennium Development Goals," Baidu chief financial officer Jennifer Li said in joint statement.

Xu Haoliang, Assistant Administrator and Director for the Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific at the UNDP, said that "Big data strategy needs a powerful partner and that the UN welcome collaborators like Baidu to contribute their expertise."
