Xiaomi’s smart TV completes portfolio
China’s Xiaomi Corp launched a 47-inch smart TV yesterday in Beijing as it aims to establish a complete product line like market leaders Samsung and Apple.
With the smart TV and the Xiaomi 3, its latest smartphone also released yesterday, Xiaomi now has product lines covering smartphone, a customized Android mobile operating system, set-top box and smart TV, according to the Beijing-based company.
“It’s not only a smart TV but a game center running Android,” said Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s founder and CEO.
The 47-inch TV, which features Samsung or LG’s panels and running Google’s Android system, costs 2,999 yuan (US$476), only half the price of competitive models.
The latest Xiaomi 3 mobile phone, equipped with a quad-core chip processor and a 13-megapixel camera, costs 1,999 yuan, less than half the price of Apple’s iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S4.
Thanks to its cheaper models and strong marketing, Xiaomi garnered 5 percent of China’s smartphone market to rank No. 6. The company narrowly surpassed iPhone in market share by the end of the second quarter, according to United States-based research firm Canalys.
