YY expects business to soar as computer games still boom

YY Inc expected to generate 1 billion yuan (US$161 million) in revenue within two or three years through helping game firms publish and distribute computer games, thanks to a market size of 50 billion yuan annually in China, the Nasdaq-listed firm said today.

Client-end computer games still accounted for about 70 percent of income for the whole Chinese game market, though its growth rate lags that of the booming mobile games, analysts said.

"It's still a market with huge potential," said Dong Rongjie, vice president of YY Inc, who is leading YY's new computer game business. "We have our unique advantages for the business."

YY, which has more than 500 million users, mostly game fans, has cooperated with Giant Interactive and Kingsoft Corp on computer game publishing, Dong added.

In the second quarter, China's computer game revenue reached 13.9 billion yuan, almost the same with 13.4 billion yuan a year ago. Comparatively, mobile game revenue jumped 40 percent year-on-year, according to Analysys International, a Beijing-based IT research firm.

The platform has become essential in the computer game market while firms with unique user resources still have opportunities, according to Analysys.

YY offers users professional game websites and specialized in-game instant message tools now.

YY has recruited more than 100 people in a new office in Zhuhai City of Guangdong Province to expand the new business.
