iPhone Users' Rights To Be Protected
THE Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has asked China Unicom to protect consumer rights after the telco decided to lock some iPhones that violate the company's rules from December 1.
It was the first comment yesterday from the ministry, which is also the industry regulator, on the telco's new marketing strategy to ensure iPhone users remain with it.
Users would have their iPhones locked and their bundled phone numbers suspended if the two are being used separately. This restriction has been put into new contracts since December 1, said China Unicom, the country's No. 2 telco.
The restriction is to prevent China Unicom's iPhone contract users from subscribing to other telcos such as China Mobile, industry insiders said.
