iPhone buyers required to pre-order online

BUYERS of iPhone 4 in China's Apple Stores have been required to place an online pre-order first because of the popularity of the smart phone, which is in short supply nationwide now.

Compared with contracted model provided by China Unicom, the iPhone 4 sold in Apple Stores is price-competitive and not bundled with any certain operator's contract.

Apple and its Chinese partner started selling iPhone 4 on September 25 and are expected to have sold 100,000 iPhone 4 models. Many domestic stores have to limit the number of iPhone 4s they could sell every hour and to every customer to avoid early sold-outs.

"Each consumer can buy only one iPhone 4 each day," said a statement posted in Apple China's Website last night.

Consumers have to pre-order iPhone 4 online with identity information and get the phone at the appointed time with their identity cards or passports in Apple Stores. The two Shanghai stores are in Lujiazui Area and on Huaihai Road.

Through China Unicom, users are required a deposit of 5,880 yuan (US$864) for 16GB iPhone 4 or 6,999 yuan for a 32GB model with a two-year contract.

In Apple Stores, however, 16GB and 32GB versions are priced at 4,999 yuan and 5,999 yuan and are not bundled to carrier contracts, which means China Mobile's users can use the phone without having to change mobile numbers.

In China, more than 70 percent mobile phone users subscriber to China Mobile, tripling the base of China Unicom.
