iPhone tie-up to boost telco's data revenue

THE launch of the CDMA iPhone by China Telecom Corp will propel the telco's mobile data income to surpass revenue from voice calls this year for the first time, the country's biggest fixed-line phone operator said yesterday in Hong Kong.

The smartphone data service income will contribute over 50 percent of the carrier's total income by the end of this year, China Telecom's CEO Wang Xiaochu said in Hong Kong yesterday.

"The introduction of the iPhone is a positive development for the company in the long term," Wang was quoted by the media as saying.

In March, China Telecom and Apple teamed up to offer the iPhone running on the CDMA (code division multiple access) network on the Chinese mainland, as the telco became the second operator to sell the model with a contract.

In a note last week Morgan Stanley said: "We believe the recent launch of CDMA iPhone should boost China Telecom's 3G net additions and help the company penetrate the high-end segment. We see an opportunity for China Telecom to gain high-end market share, particularly from China Mobile."

China Telecom had 45.6 million 3G users at the end of last month out of a total of 138.5 million mobile subscribers. It ranks third in the nation behind China Mobile with 61.9 million 3G users and China Unicom with 51.8 million.

China Telecom yesterday also launched a seven-yuan prepaid card that offers users 100 megabytes of data.
