Alstom's new center opens in Shanghai

FRENCH power equipment supplier Alstom SA enhanced its grid research capacity in China yesterday by opening a new technology center, as it expects the country to seize nearly a fifth of the global power transmission market.

China's effort to expand grid coverage and build a "smart grid" will make the nation's transmission sector a US$8 billion market in 2011, or 18 percent of the world's total, Henri Poupart-Lafarge, president of Alstom Grid, said in Shanghai.

The new grid technology center, at Shanghai's Caohejing Pujiang High-Tech Park, costs 47 million euros (US$66 million) and employs about 130 engineers.

A smart grid delivers power from suppliers to consumers using digital technology, such as two-way communications, advanced sensors and specialized computers that save energy, reduce costs and increase reliability. The State Grid Corp of China seeks to complete the smart grid for China by 2020, a boon to global equipment and technology suppliers, which also include ABB and Siemens.

The new Alstom center focuses on fields such as ultra high-voltage transmission equipment and smart grid.
