China a big buyer of German machine tools

CHINA placed orders totaling 2 billion euros (US$2.2 billion) for German machine tool producers last year, up 25 percent from a year ago, as bolstered by China’s efforts to enhance manufacturing quality and innovation, said Wilfried Schaefer, executive director of the German Machine Tool Builders Association.

Such growth ended a decline in the previous several years following the nation’s industrial expansion, Schaefer said during a preview for EMO Hannover 2017, a European-based international machine tools trade show, which will officially take place in September.

China highlighted machine tools as the key industrial components to bolster the Made in China 2025 blueprint, which is to upgrade the nation’s manufacturing by taking in advanced technologies and enhancing digitization, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said recently.

The nation’s machine tool patent application rose 51.1 percent annually to nearly 67,000 in 2015, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

China has been the largest importer of Germany’s machine tools, benefiting both production and the technology cooperation between the two nations, Schaefer said.

More Chinese machine tool producers are active in the international market, given 166 Chinese companies have signed up for the exhibition, up from around 140 for the last show four years ago, Schaefer added.
