China-made elevators for A320 mark a first

HARBIN Hafei Airbus Composite Manufacturing Center yesterday delivered its first set of elevators for the Airbus A320 as the company nears its goal of making 5 percent of the bigger A350 XWB airframe.

The elevators for the A320 aircraft will be transported to Tianjin by road before sailing to the Airbus factory in Getafe, Spain, where they will be assembled on the plane's horizontal tail.

"The delivery of the first set today proves the mature capabilities of the manufacturing center in producing composite components," said Laurence Barron, president of Airbus China.

"With A350 XWB production increasing, around 600 employees will be working in the manufacturing center by 2016."

The center started producing elevators and rudders among other parts for the A320 family in December 2009. It aims to make four sets of the parts per month in 2011 when the center will also supply rudders, elevators and maintenance doors for the A350 XWB.

Airbus and its Chinese partners, including Harbin Aircraft Industry Group Co, set up a manufacturing center in Harbin last year as part of Airbus's target of making 5 percent of the A350 XWB airframe in China. The major partners are Harbin Aircraft Industry Group Co with 50 percent and Airbus with 20 percent.

Cooperation between Airbus and the Chinese aviation industry will be worth US$200 million in 2010 and US$450 million in 2015.
