Citizen closes Guangdong watch parts factory

JAPAN'S Citizen Holdings Co Ltd has closed its watch parts factory in Guangdong Province as it transferred the assembly facility to Thailand for better productivity, the company said on Monday.

Its 14-years-old Citizen Precision Guangzhou Ltd, who had 1,042 Chinese workers in plant, stopped production on February 5 and had signed release contracts with at least 90 percent of its workers by Monday noon, the company's spokesman Yamada Yukio told Shanghai Daily.

"The reason for closing the factory was partly due to our production line being switched to Thailand," said Yamada. “Also it’s a part of Citizen Holdings' strategies to restructure overseas businesses to increase productivity."

Still 74 workers refuse to sign with the Japanese company since the operation halt was not announced in advance. Citizen said the company did so to avoid influence on the production.

"We gained the dismissal permission from local Labor and Social Security Bureau and Guangzhou Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Bureau." Yamada said, adding that company went through a legal process. Labor and Social Security Bureau of Guangzhou Huadu District confirmed the saying through its official Weibo account.

Mainly producing dial plates and mold, Citizen Precision Guangzhou was one of Citizen's manufacturing bases other than Japan and Thailand.

In 2013, Citizen combined five cooperate manufacturers to one in order to enhance efficiency due to fierce competition with Swiss watch-makers on high-end products, according to company's official filings.
