Siemens wins wind turbine contracts
GERMAN industrial conglomerate Siemens AG said yesterday it has received an order worth more than 450 million euros (US$594 million) to supply 88 wind turbines to StatoilHydro and Statkraft, both Norwegian energy companies.
The turbines are for the Sheringham Shoal, a wind farm off the coast of England, that StatoilHydro and Statkraft are building. When completed in 2011, the 315-megawatt project will be able to provide energy to over 220,000 households, Siemens said.
Siemens was also awarded a five-year service contract on the project which can be extended up to 11 years.
"Even in challenging times offshore wind farms prove to be both a valuable and profitable investment," said Wolfgang Dehen, Siemens Energy's chief executive. "Siemens ... can deliver the most reliable technology for large offshore wind farms."
