UK drug maker builds largest factory in Jiangsu

ASTRAZENECA today started the construction of a US$230 million plant in neighboring Jiangsu Province as it joins other multinational drug companies to ride on the growth of China and other emerging markets.

The new manufacturing facility -- the largest of AstraZeneca, London-based biopharmaceutical company -- is expected to be completed at the end of 2013.

It will produce both drugs developed by AstraZeneca and generic branded pharmaceutical products.

Last November, AstraZeneca took over private-owned Guangdong Beikang Pharmaceutical to diversify its product line for generic drugs.

AstraZeneca also operates a US$134 million manufacturing and supply site in Wuxi New District in Jiangsu Province, which has been in operation since 2001.
