Shanghai Centre apartments get a face-lift
THE Shanghai Centre, a city within a city, was the metropolis' first multi-use complex, and remains to be one of the largest in the city.
Anchored by the deluxe five-star The Portman Ritz-Carlton hotel, the development contains 472 premium units, 30,000 square meters of prime office space, an exclusive three-level retail plaza, a world-class performance theater and a spacious exhibition atrium.
Since the end of last year, all the premium serviced apartments, except the smallest studios, are being renovated and redecorated. The last redecoration was five years ago and only covered kitchens and bathrooms.
The renovation will take two to three years, and huge efforts are made to minimize disturbance to the residents. "Besides controlling the daily noisy time of construction, we don't work on weekends to provide a quiet environment," said Amy Zhu, leasing director of the Shanghai Centre.
"In our 20-year history, it's the biggest project of redecoration of our serviced apartments," said Zhu. "We hope to bring a new, modern and stylish environment to our customers."
The premium apartments offer all the comforts of home, and more.
The apartments are designed to Western standards, with large bedrooms and bathrooms, ample closet space and an unobstructed view of the cityscape.
In every great metropolis there is usually one destination where it all comes together - business, culture, arts, leisure, shopping and fine dining.
In Shanghai, the Shanghai Centre is widely regarded as the heart and soul of the good life.
Opened in 1990, its distinctive architectural design features three towers dramatically rising from an eight-story podium to form the Chinese character shan (mountain).
The serviced apartments also offer a wide range of entertainment and leisure activities. It is the only complex that employs a full-time events department to plan social and recreational activities.
Various classes and social groups are arranged for adults and children, including tennis, language and cooking lessons, bridge, mahjong, themed coffee mornings, afternoon tea sessions and wine tasting nights.
Each major Chinese and Western festival is celebrated in style at the Shanghai Centre, including the annual Lantern Festival, Halloween, Christmas, Easter and summer barbecue.
There are plenty of after-hours activities. You can enjoy a nice dinner in one of the 10 international restaurants, treat yourself for a rejuvenating spa treatment or go for a relaxing massage after a long day in the office.
At evening the theater is popular. China's only internationally owned and managed theater is in the Shanghai Centre.
The famous Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe is the theater's signature act. The theater also hosts events ranging from international music and dance performances to the Shanghai Arts Festival. Jazz lovers shouldn't miss the upcoming "Love in Music" Jazz Festival. For six nights in a row, starting on October 13 a different world-class jazz performer or band will hit the stage. Among them are Nils Landgren, Fourplay, Dianne Reeves, Roy Hargrove and many more. ??
