HK Services Sector Boosts Exports

HONG Kong's services sector played a significant role in supporting the growth of its external trade as the value of services exports was HK$669 billion (US$86 billion) in 2009, an average annual rise of 9.2 percent over 1999, said the Census & Statistics Department yesterday.

In 2009, exports of trade-related services represented the most important major service group, contributing 30.2 percent to the value of total exports of services. It was followed by exports of transport services at 29 percent and travel services at 19.1 percent,

In 1999, the respective percentage shares of these three major service groups in the total value of exports of services were 29.5 percent, 32.3 percent and 15.5 percent respectively.

From 1999 to 2008, the services sector in Hong Kong gained greater prominence. The contribution of the sector to gross domestic product rose from 86.1 percent in 1999 to 92.0 percent in 2008, the department said.
