CHINA plans to spend 33 billion yuan (US$482.06 million) to offer 7.5 million low income families budget houses or low-rent apartments in three years, said the vice housing and urban-rural construction minister today.
About 10 million Chinese families have living space of less than 10 square meters per person, according to 2005 statistics from the Ministry of Civil Affairs, Qi Ji, the vice minister said.
Last year the government improved living conditions for 2.5 million families by building, purchasing low-rent apartments or renovating old urban residential areas, Qi said.
Another 2.29 million families were given rent subsidies.
The country began building more than 90 million square meters of budget houses last year and completed constructing about 60 million square meters.
