Air China buys 20 B737-800s
AIR China, the country's leading carrier listed in Hong Kong, said late yesterday that it would buy 20 Boeing 737-800 planes for US$1.39 billion.
In a statement filed to the Hong Kong stock exchange, the carrier said the purchase would be "payable by cash in installments" and it would "take delivery of the Boeing aircraft in stages from 2013 to 2015."
The purchase will be funded through cash generated from Air China's business operations, commercial bank loans and other financing instruments of the airline, the statement said.
"The aircraft price is subject to an increase. Boeing has granted to the company (Air China) significant price concessions with regards to the aircraft," the statement said.
Air China, the nation's flagship international carrier, said the deal would expand its fleet capacity by about 5 percent based on available ton kilometers by the end of last year.
In particular, the deal would reinforce Air China's share in the Chinese domestic aviation market, and would also increase frequency of flights for a number of domestic and neighboring international routes, it added.
By the end of September, Air China had a fleet of 256 passenger planes, mostly Boeing and Airbus. Its network covered 250 routes to 32 countries and regions worldwide. It also has orders for more than 130 planes.
