Air China to start wireless-enabled flights

CHINESE passengers will be able to surf on a wireless Local Area Network on Air China flights starting next Tuesday as the airline successfully tested its Wi-Fi service today.

A Boeing 737-800 plane conducted an hour-long test flight over Beijing early this morning with no passenger on board.

Both the Wi-Fi and the plane's communication systems with the ground control operated well, the nation's largest international carrier announced today.

The plane will fly from Beijing to Chengdu on Tuesday for its first Wi-Fi-enabled commercial service, said Fan Heyun, a senior manager with Air China's marketing department.

Passengers can get access to a wireless LAN with their electronic devices to play games, watch entertainment programs or shop online. However, they still won't be able to access the Internet.

Fan said the company's goal is to eventually provide Internet access to passengers, but the company has to make more experiments to calculate costs before offering Internet access.
