All hands for 1st home-built cruise ship
CHINA’S first domestically built cruise ship will begin sailing from Shanghai in 2021, officials said yesterday.
China State Shipbuilding Corp, the nation’s largest shipbuilder, is cooperating with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri and the city’s Baoshan District to jointly develop the cruise ship. It will be operated by Carnival Corp.
The 135,000-ton luxury cruise liner, the world’s second-largest after the Quantum of the Seas, will be built at Shanghai’s Waigaoqiao port in the Pudong New Area or on the Changxing Island, Wu Qiang, chairman of the CSSC board, said on the sidelines of the Seatrade Cruise Asia Pacific Congress in Baoshan yesterday. Some equipment for the ship will be built in Baoshan, he added.
To facilitate the project, the district government yesterday said it would set up a 2-square-kilometer industrial park near the Wusongkou cruise terminal along the Yangtze River.
Wu said China could build a fully home-developed luxury cruise ship independently around 2030.
It is estimated 15 new cruise ships are needed annually to tap the demand of the cruise tourism markets around the world. The three shipbuilding giants — Italy’s Fincantieri, Germany’s Meyer Werft and France’s Chantiers de l’Atlantique can build about eight cruise ships every year, according to Wu.
