Assembly center for C919 starts

THE assembly center for China's jumbo jet project broke ground yesterday in Shanghai, propelling the country a step closer to its goal to develop a domestically-made jumbo jet that could compete with Boeing and Airbus.

The center, covering 2.67 million square meters and a floor area of 1.15 million square meters in Pudong New Area, will be able to assemble 20 150-seat C919 aircraft and 50 ARJ21 regional jets annually by 2016.

The first phase of the center, covering a floor area of 270,000 square meters, will be built in 2012 and will include a logistics center, a composite material center and a trial flight station.

Aircraft will also be able to use the runway at the Pudong center for their test flights.

The center is one of the two assembly centers for the jumbo jet project, with another on Changzhong Road in Zhabei District.

The two centers are operated by Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Co, a 2-billion-yuan (US$293 million) subsidiary wholly owned by the jumbo jet producer, Commercial Aircraft Corp of China.

"Kicking off the construction of the Pudong center embodies an important step for Commercial Aircraft to be capable of producing a jumbo jet," said Jin Zhuanglong, general manager of the plane maker.

Besides the assembly centers, Shanghai is home to research and development and customer service.

Commercial Aircraft is also building a new park for the R&D center.
