Aviation firms outperform index

GENERAL aviation companies bucked the downward trend of the domestic stock market yesterday on media reports China plans to open low-altitude airspace above more cities in a pilot program.

Beijing, Lanzhou, capital city of Gansu Province, and three other cities have submitted proposals about joining the program after regulators opened low-altitude airspace in Guangzhou and Changchun on a trial basis, Shanghai Securities News quoted an unidentified source as saying yesterday.

CITIC Offshore Helicopter Co, the country's biggest general aviation operator, rose 2 percent to 10.71 yuan (US$1.65) in Shenzhen yesterday. The company is engaged in offshore helicopter oil services and business flight services.

Sichuan Haite High-tech Co, a repairer of general aircraft, gained 0.44 percent to 16 yuan, and Hafei Aviation Industry Co, which makes helicopters and regional jets, climbed 0.67 percent to 25.73 yuan.

An air force official said they are mapping out thresholds and rules to regulate aircraft flying at low altitudes.

Low-altitude airspace, normally below 1,000 meters, is mostly used for police patrol, firefighting, medical emergencies and news reporting.
