China Eastern joins SkyTeam alliance
CHINA Eastern Airlines and its subsidiary Shanghai Airlines yesterday joined the SkyTeam Airline Alliance to gain access to the alliance's global network, which is expected to generate 1 billion yuan of revenue for the carrier annually.
Shanghai-based China Eastern, the country's second-largest carrier by fleet size, will fly to 921 destinations in 169 countries and regions across the world by joining the alliance, which consists of 14 airlines including China Southern Airlines, Korean Air and Air France-KLM.
"Joining an international alliance will help China Eastern strengthen global operations and competitiveness," said Liu Shaoyong, chairman of the carrier, at a celebration ceremony in Beijing yesterday.
Ma Xulun, general manager of China Eastern, said joining the alliance will help generate 1 billion yuan in revenue for the carrier by improving its network and sharing resources.
The carrier will speed up expansion by increasing flight frequencies on routes to the United States, Europe and Southeast Asia. International business now accounts for 45 percent of China Eastern, Ma said.
China Eastern, which flies to 182 destinations in more than 30 countries and regions, will bring 32 new destinations to SkyTeam's current network and increase the alliance's daily flights by 10 percent.
SkyTeam, the world's second largest airlines coalition after Star Alliance, will have 19 members by the end of 2012.
Shanghai Airlines quit Star Alliance last year after it was acquired by China Eastern.
