China Southern forms Shanghai branch
CHINA Southern Airlines yesterday set up its Shanghai branch to tap a thriving local market and the expansion of Pudong International Airport.
The China Southern Shanghai Co will initially operate three aircraft before it increases the fleet to around 10, said Tan Wangeng, the general manager of the Guangzhou-based airline, the nation’s biggest carrier by fleet size. Five cargo aircraft will also be based in Shanghai.
“The Shanghai company will mainly focus on opening more Shanghai-outbound domestic routes as we are quite optimistic about the Shanghai market,” Tan told Shanghai Daily.
He said Shanghai’s establishment of the pilot free trade zone, the soon-to-open Disneyland resort and the cruise liner port in Baoshan and Hongkou districts gave the carrier confidence that the local market will continue to grow.
The setup of the Shanghai branch company allows the carrier to have its own fleet, personnel and maintenance team based at the city’s Hongqiao and Pudong international airports.
China Southern expects Shanghai’s two airports to generate a passenger traffic of 120 million by 2020.
