China Southern to debut in NZ

CHINA Southern Airlines, which aims to more than double its flights from China to Oceania by 2015 to tap the growing trade and tourism demand between the two destinations, will operate a new direct flight to New Zealand from April 8 - the first by a Chinese airline.

The Guangzhou-based carrier plans to operate more than 110 round flights weekly from China to Oceania by 2015, up from 48 weekly flights now, it said yesterday.

It will also become the first Chinese airline to fly directly between Guangzhou and Auckland, the biggest city in New Zealand, three times a week starting on April 8. It will use an Airbus A330-200 jet on the route and 90 percent of tickets on the first flight have been sold out.

Last year, 120,200 Chinese citizens flew to New Zealand, a growth of 20 percent from a year earlier.

China has become New Zealand's second biggest trade partner and its fourth largest tourism market.

Only Air New Zealand operates direct flights between the two countries now.
