Civil aviation sector sees profit triple in 2010

CHINA'S civil aviation companies tripled their profit in 2010 to a record high as passenger traffic rebounded amid economic recovery and stronger demand for air travel.

Operating incomes of China's carriers and airport operators totaled 411.5 billion yuan (US$62 billion), up 37.2 percent from 2009, while profits grossed 43.7 billion yuan, Wang Changshun, deputy director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, said today.

Passenger number climbed 15.8 percent last year to a record 267 million.

Air carriers' profits amounted to 35.1 billion yuan, contributed by big events such as the World Expo and Asian Games.

Wang also noted that fixed asset investment in the country's civil aviation sector is expected to reach 70 billion yuan this year. Air passenger volume will expand 13 percent from last year's figure.

Passenger volume at the Beijing Capital International Airport exceeded 70 million for the first time in 2010, making it the second busiest airport around the world.

Cargo turnover jumped 25 percent from a year ago to 5.57 million tons.
