Court setup to raise hub aim

THE Shanghai Arbitration Court of International Shipping, which was unveiled yesterday, will settle disputes involving shipping traffic, logistics, transport, maritime affairs and port construction.

The special court, set up by the Shanghai Arbitration Commission and located on the north Bund, will provide an alternative forum for ship owners to solve disputes before they go to the maritime court.

"The setting up of the arbitration court will fill the gap in current shipping services in Shanghai and certainly will accelerate Shanghai to become an international shipping hub," said Liu Wei, a professor at Shanghai Maritime University.

The Shanghai Arbitration Commission has worked with Hongkou District as well as the Committee of Shanghai Urban Construction and Communications since last year in setting up the arbitration court which will have a total of 66 experts, including maritime lawyers.

The State Council has given Shanghai the go-ahead to build it into a major global financial center and shipping hub by 2020.
