Didi Kuaidi offers free rides to bind position
DIDI Kuaidi Co, the merged company of China’s two most popular taxi-hailing applications, said yesterday it’s offering free rides worth 1 billion yuan (US$161 million) in 12 cities to cement its position.
The company will also provide chauffeur and limousine services to customers as it diversifies its offerings to maintain its dominance.
Passengers can enjoy up to two free limousine rides with a maximum fare of 15 yuan on each Monday from May 25 to June 15.
The cities include Beijing, Tianjin, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Nanjing, Chongqing and Dalian.
The two apps accounted for a combined 80 percent of limousine ride bookings in China in the first quarter, with US-based Uber’s share at 8.1 percent, according to domestic consultancy Analysys International.
Didi Kuaidi handles about 5.5 million orders of taxi and chauffeur rides daily on average, and has 160 million riders.
It is also launching a carpool service in June to let commuters living in nearby neighborhoods share their rides.
“We aim to become a one-stop platform and an online dispatch center for all sorts of transportation means to suit different kinds of commuters,” Cheng Wei, chief executive officer of Didi Kuaidi, said at a press briefing in Beijing yesterday.
Alibaba Group-backed Kuaidi Taxi and Tencent-backed Didi, which offer private transport for customers who use their mobile phones to book a ride, merged their operations in February to end a price war in a competitive market.
