Firm bets on engine of growth

UNITED States aircraft engine maker Pratt & Whitney is discussing with Chinese plane makers about supplying engines for the MA700 aircraft and setting up joint ventures in China to produce, assemble and test its new generation engines.

The firm is talking with AVIC Xi'an Aircraft Industry (Group) Co on the possibility of equipping the MA700 aircraft with engines, said David Hess, the company's president in an interview with Shanghai Daily yesterday.

"The MA700 aircraft requires a next generation engine and we will test the core part of the engine this year," Hess said. The company is already an engine supplier for the MA60 aircraft.

Pratt & Whitney is also in discussions with Aviation Industry Corp of China, the country's largest plane maker, about possible production, assembly and testing of its new generation aircraft engines, Hess disclosed.

"We will conduct a wide range of cooperation with Chinese plane makers and setting up a joint venture is one option, but we have yet to map out a timetable so far," he said.

Hess said the domestic aviation industry may grow at least 7 percent this year.
