Flying high with orders

COMMERCIAL Aircraft Corp of China (COMAC) yesterday announced six domestic and foreign companies have ordered 100 C919 jumbo jets.

China's big three carriers, Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines, as well as GE Capital Aviation Services, were among the first customers to order the jet, state-owned COMAC said in a statement at the China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition held in Zhuhai in Guangdong Province where the plane maker is displaying a full-size model of the C919.

"The confirmation (of the orders) creates a market foundation for the plane which is smoothly moving from the research and development stage to the manufacturing stage," Zhang Qingwei, president of COMAC, said in the statement.

COMAC, however, didn't specify the quantity of planes each customer ordered, or disclose the contract value.

The 160-seat home-made C919 is expected to make its maiden flight in 2014, with deliveries slated in 2016.

HNA Group and China Development Bank Leasing Co were also among the domestic buyers of the aircraft, according to the statement.
