Fraport passenger levels subside
GERMAN airport operator Fraport AG said yesterday its June passenger levels at its main Frankfurt Airport fell 5.6 percent on the year, but the decline in passenger numbers had slowed.
The Frankfurt-based company said about 4.5 million passengers used the airport in June, compared with 4.8 million in the same month of last year. In May, the airport saw a 6.3 percent reduction in passengers as the global recession cut into demand.
"Passenger decline at Frankfurt continued to slow down," the firm said.
"The recovery trend accelerated particularly toward the end of the month when the summer vacation period began in several German states," Fraport said.
Frankfurt is Europe's third-largest airport after Paris Charles de Gaulle and London Heathrow.
The airport also handled 17 percent less airfreight and 10 percent less mail in June; 148,211 metric tons and 6,432 metric tons respectively in June.
Fraport said for the first half of the year, passenger levels at Frankfurt stood at 24.2 million, down 8 percent on year, while airfreight levels were nearly 22 percent lower during the first half.
Fraport also holds stakes in a number of international airports.
