Jet assembly plant takes flight

THE assembly center for China's jumbo jet project broke ground today in Shanghai, bringing the nation closer to its goal of developing a 150-seat jet to compete globally.

The center, covering an area of 2.67 million square meters in Pudong New Area, is scheduled to be capable of assembling 20 jumbo jets, codenamed C919, and 50 ARJ21 regional jets annually by 2016.

The center is one of the two assembly plants for the jumbo jet project, with another on Changzhong Road in Zhabei District.

The two centers are run by Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Co, a 2-billion-yuan subsidiary wholly owned by Commercial Aircraft Corp of China.

The Pudong center will also provide runways for jets to conduct trial flights upon completion.

Commercial Aircraft has already launched a research and development center and a customer service center for the jumbo jet project in Shanghai.
