Lingang zone main port facility opens

A MAIN port facility at Shanghai’s Lingang Industrial Zone opened for business yesterday after receiving an all-clear from state authorities.

It is believed that the port project will help reduce logistics costs for companies like Shanghai Electric Group and Caterpillar Inc.

Port officials said the new facility, with nine berths along a 760-meter line in the working area of the main industrial zone, will help attract more major equipment manufacturing companies and logistics enterprises to Lingang, which spans the Pudong New Area and suburban Fengxian District.

The facility will also help boost Shanghai’s profile as the city aims to evolve into an international shipping center by 2020.

Total investment in the thriving zone has exceeded 80 billion yuan (US$13.1 billion) since the industrial park was launched 10 years ago.
