New cargo membe
CHINA Southern Airlines will join the SkyTeam Cargo Alliance by November this year to expand its cargo network, according to a memorandum of understanding it signed with the grouping yesterday.
"Air cargo volume on international routes handled by Chinese carriers accounted for only 20 percent of that by all carriers last year, a sharp decline from 60 percent in 2007, so it's a key task for us to sharpen global competitiveness and increase our market share," said Luo Laijun, general manager of China Southern cargo department.
China Southern, the country's largest carrier by fleet size, should have joined the cargo alliance in one to two years after it joined SkyTeam Alliance in 2007, but the financial crisis delayed its participation. SkyTeam Cargo has seven airline members since its set-up in 2000.
