Output up 33.7% at domestic shipyards

THE total output of domestic shipyards was worth 300.6 billion yuan (US$44 billion) in the first seven months of this year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said yesterday.

The output was 33.7 percent higher than the corresponding period of last year, but fell short of the 58 percent growth in the first seven months of 2008 due to a fall in new orders in the first half of this year.

Total output grew 36.7 percent on year in the first six months to reach 256.1 billion yuan.

Export values over the period were 140.4 billion yuan, up 21.3 percent on year. That compared to 62.1 percent growth in the previous year.

The volume of new vessels built by domestic ship makers in the first seven months reached 187.8 million deadweight tons, according to the ministry's statistics released last Thursday.

New orders in July were 1.99 million DWT, down from 4.70 million DWT in June.

Orders held by domestic shipyards totaled 1.9 billion DWT by the end of July, down 6 percent from January 1.
