Ports throughput rises
SHANGHAI'S ports handled 15.3 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers in the first half of this year, up 10.5 percent from a year earlier and in line with the city's 30-million-TEU estimate at the beginning of this year.
The growth rate however was lower than last year's 18.8 percent, even though Shanghai remained the world's largest container and dry-bulk goods port.
Dry-bulk goods turnover rose 11.7 percent year on year to 236.1 million tons in the first six months of this year, Shanghai International Port (Group) Co, operator of the world's busiest port, has said in a statement on its website.
SIPG Chairman Chen Xuyuan said last month that Shanghai's container volume is expected to rise 10 percent annually in the next five years.
Industry people said the growth rate is slowing down because the base number is already at a high level.
Nationwide, 4.42 billion tons of dry-bulk cargo were handled in the first half, and container throughput climbed 12.9 percent year on year to 77.7 million TEUs.
Shanghai surpassed Singapore last year as the world's busiest container port, handling 29.05 million TEUs compared with the city-state's turnover of 28.4 million. The Shanghai figure represented a 16.2 percent rise from a year earlier as exports rebounded after the global financial crisis.
