Pudong airport on expansion trajectory

SHANGHAI Pudong International Airport will have a new third terminal by 2035 to allow it to handle 120 million passengers annually, Shanghai Airport Authority said yesterday.

The airport also plans to build another “terminal area” with two more terminal buildings by 2040, which will boost its handling capacity to 160 million passengers annually, the authority said during the Shanghai International City and Architecture Expo.

Lin Chen, an official from the authority, said the airport’s Terminal 3 will be located to the south of the 105-gate satellite terminal which is being built and scheduled for use by the first half of 2019.

The new terminal will see the airport getting one more runway by 2035, bringing the number to five in what will be known as “Terminal Area 1”.

The “Terminal Area 2” planned for 2040 will have three runways, Lin said.

All the airport’s terminals will be connected by express trains, and the airport will also be linked to the Shanghai East Railway Station for “easy transportation,” the authority said.

It was announced previously that a railway link between the Pudong airport and Hongqiao International Airport will be built to cut the journey between Shanghai’s two airports to 45 minutes.

The elevated Yingbin No. 1 Road leading to the departure level of Hongqiao’s Terminal 1, currently under renovation, was opened to traffic yesterday, two months ahead of schedule. The renovation of Terminal 1 is set to complete by the end of next year.
