Pudong center to turn out 20 C919 jumbo jets

COMMERCIAL Aircraft Corp of China yesterday signed a deal with the Pudong New Area government to launch an assembly center for the nation's first home-made jumbo jet there.

The facility is expected to achieve an annual production of 20 jumbo jets, codenamed C919, and 50 ARJ21 regional jets in 2016, officials said.

"This symbolizes a giant step toward achieving the country's ambition of producing a competitive jet," said Jiang Liang, governor of Pudong New Area.

The center will be constructed in a 2.7-square-kilometer area to the south of Pudong International Airport by the end of this year. The runways at the airport will be used for trial flights for the jumbo jets when they are completed, officials said.

The center, a wholly controlled subsidiary under the aircraft maker, has a registered capital of 2 billion yuan (US$293 million).

A research and development center and a customer service center for the jumbo jet project have already been launched in Shanghai. The company has another base in the city's Baoshan District.

China will invest 200 billion yuan to develop its jumbo jet.
