Rail cargo volume forecast to be flat
THE Ministry of Railways yesterday forecast rail cargo volume would be flat this year, compared with last year.
The estimate reflected a downturn in demand in the world's fastest-growing economy, according to the ministry. The ministry said it would rely more heavily on passenger transport to offset any weakness in cargo. The ministry forecast railway passengers would rise 10 percent to reach 1.61 billion trips this year. The ministry said at the end of last month that about 1.46 billion passenger trips were made last year, up 10.9 percent year on year, and 3.3 billion tons of cargo were carried, up 4.9 percent.
