Troubled waters
CHINA'S shipbuilding industry reported lower output and demand in the first four months of this year as it was hit by a weak global shipping market.
The country built ships totaling 15.65 million deadweight tons in the January-April period, down 16.8 percent year on year, the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry said yesterday.
New shipbuilding orders received during the period hit 7.37 million dwt, a sharp decline of 45.9 percent, it said.
At the end of April, orders on the books of Chinese shipbuilders totaled 139.24 million dwt, down 26.1 percent from a year earlier and 7.1 percent from the end of 2011.
