Work begins on jumbo jet engine base
THE engine supplier for China's jumbo jet project started building its research and development base in Shanghai's Minhang District yesterday.
The base, with a floor area of 300,000 square meters, is expected to be completed in 2013 at a cost of 3.23 billion yuan (US$473 million), AVIC Commercial Aircraft Engine Co said yesterday.
It will house the company's headquarters, an R&D center, an airworthiness center, an international project center, an international communication center, a client service center and apartments for professional staff.
"The center can hold 3,000 staff on completion and we will recruit global professionals," said Zhang Jian, the company's general manager.
The company will research and develop engines for China's 150-seat jet project, code-named C919. But in future, it is also likely to make engines for more types of aircraft, such as 250-seat jets, regional jets and business jets, Zhang said.
China's jumbo jet will be equipped with foreign-made engines for its maiden flight in 2014, but AVIC Commercial Aircraft Engine will produce engines for the jet in 2016.
AVIC Commercial Aircraft Engine signed a memorandum of understanding with its German counterpart MTU Aero Engine to research and develop the engines.
It also chose Lingang New City in Shanghai's Pudong New Area for assembly lines for the engines.
