Yao Ming enjoys more leg room on A380

FORMER NBA giant Yao Ming had to duck his head when entering the cabin of the Airbus A380 jet plane, but Yao who was invited today to the maiden flight of China's first superjumbo said it was "far more comfortable" for him than any previous planes he had taken.

"Still a bit cramped for me but I understand it is designed for 'normal' people," said the retired 2.26-meter-high center of Houston Rockets.

The superjumbo, bought by China Southern Airlines, took off around 10am today for its first flight from Beijing to Guangzhou.

More than 330 officials, journalists and the airline's guests from both home and aboard, including Yao, were aboard the 506-seat plane, the world's biggest, with 24 well-picked stewardesses during the 2.5-hour flight.

Yao sat in one of the eight luxury suites named "platinum" with sliding doors. They are fitted with a leather-upholstered seat, a table, a 58-centimeter flat-screen TV, the largest for a passenger jet, and laptop connections. The seat can convert into a 2-meter-long, 0.83-meter-wide bed.

"It is the first time that I can fully stretch my feet while sitting in a passenger plane," Yao said.

Shanghai-Beijing one-way ticket costs 1,130 yuan for economy class, 2,830 for the first class and 3,160 for luxury suites, starting from October 27. The prices are the same as with other planes flying the same route.
