Zhenhua to build eco-port in Tangshan
ZHENHUA Heavy Industry Co yesterday signed a framework agreement with Tangshan City's Caofeidian Industry Zone to build the nation's first self-designed environment-friendly container port.
The Shanghai-based port machinery maker will equip the port in northern China's Hebei Province with two automated container berths which will have an annual throughput of 300,000 TEUs (20-foot-equivalent units) each. The company will also build a shore bridge in each phase of the project.
The efficiency of the electric-powered handling system, which includes cranes and heavy lifting equipment, at the port's new container berths will be boosted by 20 percent compared to the global average. Using electric power, the port will also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 25 percent than traditional docks that use combustion engines to power their equipment.
"We hope other domestic ports as well as overseas ports will become interested in using electricity," said Kang Xuezeng, president of Zhenhua Heavy Industry. "Electricity will offer the market an environment-friendly new concept and more efficient handling systems."
The State Council, or China's Cabinet, has plans to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 40 to 45 percent in 2020 from the level in 2005.
