Alipay scam

HANGZHOU police have captured three people suspected of stealing money from Alipay accounts. Alipay is China's Paypal equivalent.

To date, the suspects, including a college student, have illegally broken into 628 Alipay accounts and stolen 320,000 yuan, according to police.

When a person registers an Alipay account, he or she has to provide a question only he or she knows the answer to prevent the account from being used by others. If the user forgets their password or loses the phone link, he or she need to answer the question they provided to get back the password or change the phone number.

The three suspects used special software to gather Alipay accounts. By successfully guessing the answers, they changed the codes and then stole the money in the accounts, police said.

The police warned people should choose questions that others would not be able to guess easily. They added people should not release private information on the Internet.
