Ancient West Lake runs into modern Expo with enthusiasm
SHANGHAI is bringing the World Expo 2010 into other Chinese cities as it gears up to host its own Olympics-scale event.
Over the past week, Shanghai and Hangzhou have launched a weeklong promotional campaign for Hangzhou as part of the publicity drive and preparations for next year's World Expo. The exhibitions wrap up in Shanghai today and will end tomorrow in Hangzhou.
Hangzhou Week is part of the ongoing promotions by the organizers of Expo 2010. For this particular promotional campaign on Hangzhou, the exhibition divides the focus between the featured city and the World Expo.
Based on the theme "Exciting Expo, Quality Hangzhou," the exhibition introduces the city famous for its silk, Longjing tea and West Lake, along with a history of the World Expo, known as the World's Fair in its heyday.
Water plays a central attraction at the exhibition, as Hangzhou promotes its Urban Best Practices Area (UBPA) display and showcases its water control practices.
This is in line with the Expo theme "Better City, Better Life" and the move toward creating a better and more sustainable lifestyle in future urban environments around the world.
The project "Harnessing Five Waters" is the star of Hangzhou's innovative initiatives that aim to combine green design with urban construction. Built of blue bricks, the pentagonal pavilion contains water collected from various lakes and rivers in the area including West Lake, the Qiantang River that runs through Hangzhou, the Xixi Wetlands and the East China Sea.
Interactive
There is an interactive element to the exhibit - visitors will be able to learn how the tide works and how water flows when they step on special sections. A cartoon character, Shuiwa, will guide visitors through the display.
Through its UBPA exhibit, the city hopes to present itself as a quality city, according to Zhang Jianting, Hangzhou's vice mayor.
Hangzhou's "Harnessing Five Waters" project is one of over 55 projects selected by the Expo organizers to be exhibited in the UBPA at the Expo site. The area offers a global stage for cities around the world to share their ideas and propose solutions to urban problems.
The fair also features the sights and attractions of Hangzhou. As well as highlighting the city's famous West Lake, the exhibition also showcases lesser known places of interest like the tea fields.
During the promotional period for Hangzhou Week, the public may visit the Expo Website (www.xh-expo.com) where they can win prizes for providing the right answers to questions related to the topics of "Harnessing Five Waters" and "Quality Hangzhou."
Even as Shanghai undergoes a face-lift to ready itself for Expo 2010, other Chinese cities are also taking part in the process. Since 2007, Hangzhou has committed itself to participating in the preparations leading up to the event.
Because of the Zhejiang Province city's link with Shanghai for Expo 2010, the event shares the spotlight with the featured city in the Hangzhou Week exhibition. Apart from highlighting Hangzhou, the fair also has an Expo 2010 section which showcases the history of the World Expo and provides all the latest information on the preparations and pavilion construction for the mega-event.
At the Shanghai exhibition, information and artists' images of the futuristic-looking pavilions for Expo 2010 come accompanied with models of pavilions and other items and displays from previous World Expos.
Alongside the exhibition on Expo 2010 is a feature on Hangzhou's famous West Lake International Expo and convention center. Although the original West Lake Expo started in 1929, this Expo Center has been running now for 11 years offering conferences, exhibitions, celebrations and festivals throughout the year.
For this promotional campaign, the fairs in both Hangzhou and Shanghai provide an information-packed exhibition on the historical origins of both the West Lake International Expo and World Expo.
Preparations
Hangzhou has also launched its official Website for Expo 2010 (www.hzexpo2010.com), which provides updates on the city's preparations for the event and other related news.
The Shanghai 2010 World Expo will be held from May 1 to October 31.
There is a real air of excitement throughout the nation and overseas for the event, much of this due to the vast size and the in-depth preparations. The organizers expect 70 million visitors to throng to the event, with an estimated 200 or more participants.
To date, 191 countries and regions as well as 48 international organizations have confirmed participation in the event.
