Artist with a natural eye for color
ART doesn't have to be a painting or a sculpture. South Korean Dr Kim Sung-hee is an artist who avoids typical mediums as she prefers to work with fabrics and natural dyes.
Sanshang Art Museum in Hangzhou is hosting an exhibition of her work.
The exhibit, titled "Date of Sumu," includes long pieces of cloth hanging from the ceiling and pieces of silk knotted together like flowers. Clothes, shoes and scarves cover the walls and floor.
Sumu refers to brasilin, a type of wood that was used to extract a red dye for cloth.
Kim uses traditional methods to dye her fabrics.
She has a PhD in Chinese textiles from Donghua University in Shanghai. She runs a studio which makes tailor-made clothing for customers in Shanghai.
Kim only works with natural fabrics such as cotton, silk, linen and wool. She uses traditional Chinese dyeing techniques to give clothes natural colors extracted from plants.
Zhu Yin, curator of the exhibition, says: "Natural dyes can make various colors and clothing dyed by natural plants are more comfortable to human eyes.
Kim says she wants people to understand the value of a slower pace of life through her clothes and artwork.
"Fast fashion results in many sequences such as pollution, which is the cost of modernization," she says. "Clothes made of traditional dyes can't be manufactured. I want people to enjoy a slow pace of life when visiting the exhibition."
Date: through February 5, 9am to 5:30pm
Address: Sanshang Art Museum, 52-2 Yan'an Rd S.
