Baby giraffe born
A GIRAFFE gave birth to a baby in Hangzhou Safari Park on Saturday. It is the first giraffe born in the zoo and the only one in Hangzhou in six years.
The young calf, a female, began to walk 12 hours after birth. As it struggled to stand up, zoo keepers were surprised to find it is taller than a man with a height of nearly 190 centimeters.
It took the mother giraffe nearly four hours to deliver her baby. The forelegs of the young giraffe came out first at 6:30am, but three hours went by and its head was still inside the mother’s body. So zoo keepers and veterinarians helped to pull the baby out by its forelegs. At 10:19am, the baby was born.
Zoo keepers said that it normally takes a giraffe about two hours to deliver a calf, but their giraffe was not strong enough. Zoo feeders were pleased that the baby giraffe was very active even though its birth was four days overdue. Giraffe pregnancies last 15 months.
After giving birth, the mother giraffe ate a lot of fresh vegetables. The new mother kept licking her baby from head to toe to keep it from getting cold.
Hangzhou Safari Park invites people to submit a proposed name for the newborn giraffe to the park via wechat or weibo.
