Building Qiantang riverside park and tunnel
CONSTRUCTION has begun on an eight-lane tunnel under the intersection of Qiantang River and Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal to ease traffic. Completion is expected in 2011.
The 1,188-meter tunnel project will cost an estimated 6.9 million yuan (US$1 million).
Planners decided to tunnel under and across the water rather than build a bridge and obstruct the view from the new Wangjiang Park, which is also under construction and offers a view of the Qiantang River.
The tunnel will have four, two-way traffic lanes permitting speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour. The height is 4.5 meters.
"We hope to retain the nice view of Qiantang River, so we decided on a tunnel," said an official of the Qianjiang New City Management Committee.
The tunnel will be convenient for residents near Wubao and Jiubao, who usually use the old Hanghai Road that is overcrowded and in need of maintenance. The tunnel will save time.
Wangjiang Park
The park project costing 91.7 million yuan will adopt a wave motif inspired by the Qiantang River, famous for its enormous tides. The project includes recreation and supporting facilities of Qianjiang New City on the river.
The park will also have underground parking for 290 motor vehicles and 900 square meters for bicycle parking. A 4,000-square-meter supermarket will also be built.
Two tea houses will be built, one five stories offering a view of the river, and one two stories offering a view of the park.
Construction is expected to take 450 days and the park will open in 2011.
