Cancer risk
MORE than 70 percent of residents have been found to be in the high-risk population for cancer, according to a survey by the Zhejiang provincial authority last week.
Of the 14,994 people who completed the survey, 10,529 have been found to be at high risk of cancer.
After screening 2,198 people, six people were diagnosed with cancer. Another 13 suspected patients will receive further checks.
A quarter of respondents were found to be at high-risk for upper digestive tract cancer, 14 percent to colorectal cancer, 12,5 percent to lung and liver cancers, and 11 percent to breast cancer risk, according to the survey, which covered both Hangzhou and Ningbo.
Hangzhou’s tumor incidence has risen sharply in the past decade. In 2003, the malignant tumor incidence was 293 per 100,000 people while it rose to 335 per 100,000 in 2009, when the national average was 285 per 100,000.
Quitting smoking, avoiding second-hand smoke, drinking less alcohol, exercising regularly, eating well and keeping a positive outlook on life can help prevent cancer, said Du Lingbin, deputy director of the Zhejiang Tumor Prevention Office.
