Children's art for imagination
DISTORTED patterns in bright colors, childlike stroke and style, overlapped cartoon elements, though adults may not notice what artist Chen Dongfan's paintings are about at first glance, children do.
At children's reading room in Hangzhou Public Library, First Chapter of "Story 9," a public art program by Chen is being taken place since Children's Day, with 30 pieces of Chen's latest works hung in the reading room in an organized layout.
Facing abstract and unrealistic paintings, adults sometimes get confused, while children's answers are "various and enlightening," says Chen, adding they interpret his painting patterns into plants and animals.
In fact the theme of the program is that things are looking up, words from mouths of babes - two key words in celebrated writer Eileen Chang's essay "From Mouths of Babes."
So, words from mouths of babes and children are most welcomed.
"Children own much richer imagination than adults, and I created the program in purpose of making people feel free to imagine," Chen adds.
In the reading room all on curtains idioms are written, in a tone of parents, to echo the theme. Also sound art is involved: Speakers above bookshelves of the room play a record of a mother's reading books for her child repeatedly.
